Individual Action Plans

Session 6: Individual Action Plan Presentations

Action Plan Objective
Steve Allen
Presentation
Good planning is always dependent on the final review of those it impacts. Harmony, born of inclusion, lays the groundwork for creating a diverse accessible environment. Implementing universal design concepts works for every user that either by preference or necessity depends on public transportation. To connect to the largest audience, begin by appealing to those that are most impacted by accessible public transportation.  You will find that nearly everyone’s life connects to someone in that group.
Jenna Berman
Presentation
To promote downtown bicycle commuting and work to alleviate perceived barriers.
Jean Bratcher
Presentation
My Action Plan has evolved.  Originally I thought a good way to get involved was to get on the City of Thornton’s Development Permit and Appeals Board which is a citizen seated board to approve projects.  But during my investigation and application I found that being on the board is too  late in the process to really guide the principles of Transit Oriented Design.  FasTracks is just one of the opportunities to create special places in Thornton.  There are lots of areas that need to be redeveloped and many new opportunities with future development.
Matt Brower
Presentation
To establish one or two viable sites/areas primed for a TOD, and after thorough investigation, move forward with building the team and implementing the development plans.

To create an area along the Brighton Boulevard Corridor that everyone wants to enjoy, i.e. tourist and residents.  With RTD building the 38th street station train station and another station in Swansea present owners, business association, and resident need to ensure that developers take advantage of the natural amenities so we can instill creative thinking and design in one of the last areas of change in Denver.  Establish a business office for the development and coordination of this area.
Kyle Callahan
Presentation
Parking management plan for proposed transit station and village - City of Louisville.  Consider and evaluate the cost and possible impacts associated with two scenarios (structured versus surface parking).  Develop a best case strategy to effectively address projected parking impacts, and assist in determining a process to acheive the best case.  This may include the identication of possible developeros, creating a public/private investment strategy, creating a marketing strategy, devising a possible street parking regulatory program for existing neighborhoods, determining zoning provisions that may need revision to accomodate increased height and mixed use, and consider growth potential, among others.
Malia Campbell
Presentation
Increase the use of alternative modes for commuting by educating Downtown employers and employees.
Glenn Cashmore

To build public awareness and enthusiasm for the upcoming Boulder Transit Village. To increase public participation in the process and investment in the ultimate outcome. My overall objective is to become a stronger ADVOCATE for development ‘best practices’. My definition of ‘best practices’ is designing with an eye to the future and with an understanding of how our built environment impacts our communities for the next hundred years.   My secondary objective is to create strategic alliances that will help me to IMPLEMENT good design. Words are wonderful, but they are even stronger when they are reinforced with action.  My successes, created by action, will be centered on the tenets of EQUALITY, ENVIRONMENT, and ENTERPRISE.
Nathan Green
Presentation
My final action plan objective is as follows.  First I will continue my personal education regarding T.O.D. in Denver and the rail development in the region as well.  During that time I will become the expert in T.O.D. in my real estate office.  That’s the main objective but it comes with several sub-objectives.  While becoming the expert I will begin to educate the other agents that work for Coldwell Banker, not only in my specific office but in all the offices in our region.  I will also educate all of my clients as to the benefits of living in a community developed near Transit.  Lastly along the lines of bringing the message of T.O.D. to other Coldwell Banker offices I will continually seek out other venues and opportunities to educate the general public on the same.  The more people we have as advocates of Fastracks and transit in Denver, the more likely it would be completed as planned.

I think there is a compelling economic development argument to be made regarding the importance of transit and the sense of place it can create.  Good transit by its very nature catalyzes an infrastructure that encourages pedestrian and biking connections.  Transit, walking and biking more equals driving less.  Driving less means less smog and adverse effects to our health and environment.  More sense of place and community encourages a better quality of life and a better quality of life encourages investment in housing, retail and amenities.  So…money is saved through less expenditure on addressing adverse environmental and health effects, less investment in building new roads.  Economies are strengthened as people are willing to pay a premium to live near a well planned community and spend their time and money there.  Businesses want to locate there and new ventures come to places that have the transit infrastructure and the business and the people who work at the businesses spend money, support business and generate more sales and property tax revenue.

Through my involvement with the Sierra Club’s Sprawl & Transportation committee and Boulder Co. Energy Strategy Task Force and with a background in urban planning – more recently alt modes transportation planning,  I am interested in developing some community and developer based guidelines / toolkit for Travel Demand Management (TDM) – ie how to build TOD’s correctly to reduce reliance on the automobile – not the typical TDM programs after it’s been built. I hope to share this with other communities and the Boulder Transit Village process. I think this would be a relevant tool for Transit Alliance to share… I’d like to work with others."
